So what do you need to know to draw your own house plan?

1. You need to know how to lay out your Floor Plan. The floor plan is the template for your entire set of drawings. From the floor plan show where we want our electrical, tell how big our rooms are, note our window and door sizes, etc., so this is where we have to begin. Sure you could start with the exterior views but that would limit our interior of the home to what the outside looks like. Not a good idea! The house needs to be functional first and look pretty second out of necessity.

2. You need to understand the mechanics of a well designed kitchen. A kitchen is a place where the homemaker spends a majority of their time. It needs to be comfortable but functional. This area consists of a Sink area, Cooking area, & Food storage area. The best layout for a kitchen is one in which the least steps are taken to reach each appliance. This is called the working area or working triangle. A good working triangle doesn’t exceed 12 to 14 feet all the way around.

3. The builder of the home would sure appreciate knowing where the walls, windows, & doors are located exactly. They would also like knowing door and window sizes, not to mention anything else special that is on the plan. That’s where the dimensions and notes come in handy. You need to be able to create a dimensional string and groups of notes that are not confusing.

Before you start, it is essential that you be using the proper equipment. Unlined mixing cups (no wax), mixing sticks and a quality electronic scale with an accuracy of .1 grams are all very important. Without these items, ink mixing becomes guess work, causing the quality and precision of the print to suffer.

Step by Step Ink Mixing:

Have you ever watched your mosaic grout seemingly shrink before your eyes as it hardens? Arrrrg! The grout lines are no longer flush with the tesserae and tiny pinholes mysteriously appear. Now what?

As the grout sets and hardens, you may notice grout shrinkage (i.e., the grout lines are like little valleys where the grout sinks and isn’t flush with the tesserae). This used to happen to me a lot when I mixed the grout too runny. However, since using thick, pasty grout, I’ve experienced much less grout shrinkage. Don’t fret! It’s an easy fix. Simply re grout the mosaic. It’s a lot easier the second time, especially when using thick, pasty grout.

If you’re not crazy about the idea of going through the whole grouting process again, here’s a little trick I use at the end of my normal grouting process. After the last wiping cycle when the grout has set for about 45 minutes, go back and carefully inspect the entire mosaic for tiny pinholes, missed areas, depressed grout lines (i.e., where the grout is no longer flush with the tesserae), and other grout imperfections.

CAUTION: Cement (i.e., grout) is mildly caustic so don’t do this process with your bare hand. Wear a rubber or plastic glove for protection.

Use the leftover grout if it’s still workable. If it’s not, then mix another small batch (two tablespoons of grout powder are usually enough). Add just a bit of water at a time so you don’t end up with grout soup (i.e., the grout should be thick and pasty, not runny). Wearing a glove, use your index finger to scoop up a dab of grout and rub it into the imperfect area. Fill the little pinholes that invariably occur, and the little gaps that you missed, and the little depressions that seem to form as the grout sets. Simply fill in those imperfections with your finger, wipe off the excess grout from your finger, and then use your clean finger or a dry paper towel to carefully wipe up the excess grout without disturbing the grout line. Voila! The imperfections are fixed. Don’t accept those imperfections! Go back and fill them in.

1. Artwork. The artwork you start art with is VERY important. If you have jagged or grainy artwork, you will reproduce this. There are many art services on the internet that will supply you will screen printing artwork. If you fax them a logo, they can redraw it for you and send you a file in which you can use for the making of screens.

You can also create (or recreate) artwork yourself. It is imperative to use a vector art program like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw or Macromedia FreeHand. Using these programs will ensure that you will have high quality artwork in the end. Photoshop can be used as well, but this is more for full color printing, etc., which is not good to start out with since there are special techniques to master before moving into this realm.

2. Film Positives. When you have artwork that is ready to print, you can print your artwork out on a clear film instead of paper. There are different types of paper for inkjet and laserjet printers, so be sure you select the right type. For every color you have, you will print it out as a black plate on a separate film. For example, if you have a logo that is Red & Black, you would separate the two colors from themselves and print each out, changing the red to black and printing and then printing the black. Each of these would be printed on their own film.

This is simply known as art separations, or “seps”. If the colors are touching in the final version of the logo, then you need to have what is called trap or choke. Basically, it’s an overlapping of the artwork by a small margin. This small margin is just enough so you can register the colors so there is no space between them. On the films, you will also place registration marks. These marks usually are a circle with a verticle and horizontal line passing through it. These marks will be on the same spot on each film. This will help you line up the art later so the images match up perfectly.

3. Screen Making. When screen printing began it was called silk screening. The reason for this is, the screens used to be made from silk. Since this is no longer the case (now they are made from polyester), the name changed. A screen is simply a wooden or metal frame that has a fine mesh stretched over and attached to it. This mesh has different counts. Some examples would be 83, 110, 125, 140, 330 and on and various numbers in between. The lower the mesh count, the less detail you can print and the thicker the ink lays down. So it is an artform to say the least in dealing with correct mesh. The actual process of screen making is quite simple, just time consuming. Capillary film is stilled used but the most common technique is using a light sensitive liquid emulsion. Emulsion can be used under a yellow light so that you still can see what you are doing, but the UV light is filtered out so as not to effect the emulsion. A scoop coater is needed. You pour emulsion into the scoop coater and place it on a vertical screen. Pressing up against the screen and pulling up, you will lay a thin layer of emulsion on the outside of the screen. Turn the screen around and do the same for the inside of the screen. Turn it back around and do it once more on the outside.

You probably think, “Mosaic tables are nothing new or unique, so what’s this guy talking about?” You’re right! Search the Internet for “mosaic table” and you’ll find that most websites offer round bistro or kitchen tables with wrought iron stands done with mosaic designs using standard tessera shapes (i.e., squares and triangles) in standard checkerboard, circular, or sunburst patterns. You’re right, those kinds of tables are a dime a dozen. That’s not what I’m talking about.

Imagine a beautiful stained glass transom window above your front door. Or a delightful stained glass sun catcher hanging in front of your kitchen window. Now, imagine the stained glass design on a wooden table top, such as an end table, sofa table, or entry table. That’s the true uniqueness I’m talking about. Imagine your foyer or vestibule with its stylish hardwood floor, intricate baseboard and crown molding, and a gorgeous mirror centered on the wall with an antique coat stand in the corner. The image looks wonderful, but it’s missing something. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you know it needs more. Aha! Something must act as a transition from the floor to the mirror on the wall. That’s it! An entry table. But not just any ordinary entry table. An elegant stained glass mosaic entry table done in a rich, full stain color that perfectly complements the hardwood flooring. Imagine another room in the home with similarly wonderful mosaic furniture, such as end tables, curio tables, and sofa tables.

Unfortunately, it does not work. Suddenly, the creative excitement and anticipation turn to outrageous frustration.

Like a roadside bomb or stepping on a nail; a surge of rage upsets the sewer. Messed up sewing machines can cause the most dedicated sewer to feel like quitting.

Sewing consistency includes regular sewing machine maintenance and care. Infrequent sewing, tends to increase basic sewing machine problems due in part to neglect. For both the occasional sewer and the more active sewers, it is important to identify sewing machine problems and resolve them.

When you are sewing, you may encounter many different types of problems, The challenge is to figure out what exactly is going on to cause those malfunctions.

When you sew, you come to expect certain things. Most of all you expect a properly formed stitch. When a good quality stitch fails to appear, it is a sewing crisis requiring immediate remedy.

Use a quick sewing test to find the problem. Set your sewing machine for a straight stitch with a medium length. Sew a four to five inch seam on standard woven fabric with a new universal point needle. Repeat the same using a medium width and medium length zig zag stitch.

Inspect your test seams. How do the stitches look? Ideally, the threads along the top of fabric snugly lay on top of the fabric separated by small puncture points. It should look the same when you inspect the bottom of the fabric.

What irregularities can be expected? You may see stitches with thread loops, wobbles, or balls. You may see missing stitches and other distortions. In extreme cases, stitches may fail to form altogether.
